Baseball and softball players have plenty of factors to consider when buying a new bat. You want to get the right length, balance, material, and certification. While Baseball Savings covers many of these in the Bat Buying Guide, we want to take a closer look at the construction of these bats. Do you need a one-piece or a two-piece bat? Each one has its own feel, swing, and advantages for different types of players. This guide will make it easier to decide whether a one-piece bat or a two-piece bat is right for you.
One-Piece Bats
The construction of a one-piece bat is simple. Any bat made out of a single piece of material is considered a one-piece bat. These bats can be made out of metal, wood, or composites. Because of this solid construction, one-piece bats often feel stiffer at impact and have less give throughout the swing.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of a one-piece bat is that it doesn’t lose power when you make contact with the ball. Since it is more rigid and flexes less through the hitting zone, more energy is transferred to the ball. That allows you to hit for more power.
Another advantage are the benefits they provide for players with fast hands. If you have a fast swing speed through the zone, the one-piece bat makes contact even more powerful. You also get honest feedback. When you mis-hit the ball, there is plenty of vibration, but players who like a one-piece bat may want that type of feedback.
Finally, one-piece bats are more forgiving than they used to be. Since these bats are made out of one solid piece of material, there is no buffer between the vibrations of the barrel down into the handle when you make contact. Modern materials and construction processes have made those vibrations less harsh than in the past.
Who It’s For
One-piece bats are often the preferred construction for power hitters and players with fast swing speeds. Strong players who swing fast will benefit the most of the performance this type of bat provides. By combining a powerful swing with less flex, a one-piece bat transfers maximum energy to the ball at impact. That means you are hitting the ball over the fence more often. If you are a power hitter, then a one-piece bat is the choice for you.
Two-Piece Bats
Two-piece bats are made by constructing the barrel and the handle separately and then joining them together to make a complete bat. These two pieces can be made of the same materials or can be two different materials. Two-piece bats where the barrel and handle are made of different materials are called hybrids.
Advantages
Two-piece bats provide a much smoother swing. The nature of the construction, where two pieces are joined together, helps dampen vibration and take the sting out of mis-hits. Without harsh vibrations, a batter can be more confident and aggressive at the plate, leading to better at-bats.
This type of bat also flexes more as you swing. The connection between the two pieces creates a flex point, making the “whipping” sensation as you send the bat through the hitting zone. That creates more trampoline effect to send energy into the ball, generating power and speed from that action.
Finally, this construction lends itself toward being more helpful in creating speed. For players who do not swing super fast or hard, the “whip” effect increases bat speed for you. A two-piece bat lets you increase your bat speed without having to swing the bat harder.
Who It’s For
Two-piece bats are a great fit for players who have average or possibly below-average swing speeds. If you need help generating more speed and power, then a two-piece bat is what you are looking for. Contact hitters prefer this type of bat construction. A two-piece bat allows a contact hitter to swing the bat fast, put the ball in play, and control their contact to get on base. Also, if you prefer a smooth feel on every swing, then a two-piece bat is the best fit.
