The best wood bats are used at the professional level with three major brands currently leading the way: Victus, Marucci, and Louisville Slugger. These bats are typically carved out of carefully selected maple or ash billets, cut according to length/weight, and tailored to each player’s specific needs. They’re also some of the most aesthetically-pleasing bats on the market. Here’s a closer look at the top bat brands dominating the MLB.
Victus
In 2017, Marucci acquired Victus Sports, creating one of the best 1-2 punches across the wood bat landscape. Victus combines computerized machinery with hand craftsmanship to make high quality wood bats of maple, ash, and birch. Their top-shelf bat features the ProPACT finish, which alleviates the break-in process and hardens the wood through compression, not to mention giving it a stunningly smooth look. Under current Major League standards, wood bats must have straight grains of at least 20 inches from the handle to the logo. Victus’ goal is to actually exceed that standard to ensure their bats are more resistant to breaking. Plus, with their unique color finishes and logo designs, Victus thrives on setting themselves apart from the competition.
Marucci
Marucci maintains their own mill in Pennsylvania to ensure they acquire only the highest quality maple or ash. Each billet is individually examined for perfect grain lines. Those flawless billets are then cut into bats one at a time using a large lathe. Next they are hand-sanded to perfection and painted. Bats are then hung to dry before personalization and finishing. Player names and the model are engraved on the barrel, a label is applied to the taper, and the knob is stamped with either the size or personalized initials. Each bat is also examined for any external flaws such as scratches, smudges, paint chips, or engraving errors. This kind of attention to detail is why Big Leaguers trust Marucci, and why you should as well.
Louisville Slugger
Starting in 2002, Louisville Slugger began making Major League bats on a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machine operated by the most experienced bat makers. The advantage of the CNC is that it makes precision bats every time. After the bat comes out of the CNC, it’s branded with special coding such as “D181” which would mean that it’s the 181st model of bat made for a player with a last name beginning with D. If a player has a contract with Louisville Slugger, his signature will also be branded on the bat. (The company does make bats for players without contracts – their names appear in block lettering). After the branding, they’re sanded down and dipped in lacquer to give them a shiny surface.
