What Are Turf Baseball Cleats?

Author: Brian Davis | Updated: May 15th, 2025

Whenever you’re playing baseball or softball, you want to make sure you have the traction you need to stay on your feet. You’re probably already familiar with metal and molded cleats as these are worn most often. But what about turf baseball cleats? They can be extremely beneficial if you’re playing on certain types of surfaces. Let’s discuss when and why you should wear them.

What Are Turf Baseball Cleats?

They are a type of shoe for baseball and softball that feature a rubber nub or tread pattern instead of spikes. This gives them a more sneaker-like appearance. Turf cleats usually feature a low profile, extremely flexible soles, and are designed for maximum mobility.

Turf Cleats Compared To Metal Cleats:

Metal cleats have thin blades arranged in a precise pattern to dig into dirt or sometimes even mud in order to give you the best traction possible. But on turf, they’re ineffective because they can’t dig in. That’s when players turn to turf cleats, which can feature small rubber nubs on the bottom that grip the turf surface and help the foot push off with minimal slippage. Many wearers also find them more comfortable than traditional cleats:

Turf Cleats Compared To Trainers:

These are easy to get confused because they look so similar. To differentiate between turf shoes and trainers, sometimes you have to study the bottom of the shoes closely. Turf shoes will often have more nubs spread consistently across the entire bottom. Trainers often have less nubs and feature more creative tread designs. You can wear trainers on artificial turf if you prefer and they give you enough traction but turf cleats will grip the ground more effectively.

Where Can You Wear Turf Shoes?

As mentioned before, turf cleats work best on turf and artificial grass. They can also be worn on other soft, dry indoor surfaces.

Can You Wear Turf Shoes On The Gym Floor?

We don’t recommend it. The rubber nubs on turf shoes are meant for soft ground, particularly turf. They don’t provide any benefit on hard floors and could actually end up hurting your feet and/or joints. In this case, you’re much better off with trainers, which have a flatter, more supportive base.

Are Turf Cleats Worth It?

It’s not so much a question of whether turf baseball cleats are any better or worse than traditional cleats, but rather what works best for different play scenarios. It really all depends on the type of surface you’re playing on and what’s going to give you the best advantage on the field. If a lot of your games are on turf, they’re an absolute must-have because only they can give you the traction you need to perform your best!
