What Are MCS Baseball Cleats?

Generally speaking, there are two types of cleats: metal and molded baseball cleats. But you will also come across another lesser known cleat type: MCS. Exactly what are MCS baseball cleats? They’re much closer to molded than metal but what are the specific differences and why should you consider wearing them? Let’s dive in:

What Does MCS Mean For Baseball Cleats?

MCS cleats are similar to molded cleats but incorporate a hard plastic material (instead of rubber) for its spike pattern. These studs are abrasion and impact-resistant while still offering plenty of comfort.

Benefits Of MCS Cleats:

Simply put, MCS cleats are easier on the feet. They’re lighter, helping to alleviate stress on the joints and feet, and because there’s more cleats on each shoe, they distribute weight more evenly, making them more comfortable. They also reduce the risk of injury (more on that in the next section). Wearing metal non-stop for an entire season is certainly the player’s prerogative, but it’s always good to know an alternative exists.

MCS Baseball Cleat Performance vs. Metal Cleats:

Nothing digs into the ground as aggressively and effectively as metal cleats, so in terms of traction, the MCS cleat will be a downgrade. However, that hasn’t stopped many players, including professionals, from wearing MCS cleats at least part of the season to give their feet a break. If you’re playing a hundred or so games each year, we’d say that warrants having a pair in your bag.

When In Doubt, Try A Hybrid:

If you’re intrigued by MCS cleats but not sold on them, consider a hybrid cleat, which typically places metal spikes in the forefoot and molded or MCS cleats in the back. This can help reduce wear and tear on the body while still giving you the dig necessary for explosive movements on the base paths and in the field.

More metal and traditional molded cleats are manufactured and worn, so it’s easy for MCS cleats to slip through the cracks. And if you’re shopping for baseball cleats for the first time, you might not have even heard of them. However, MCS cleats can provide advantages over the course of long seasons or for year-round players, including increased comfort without sacrificing a great deal of performance.
