No matter what bat you have or at which level of baseball you’re in, your bat will experience wear and tear as time goes on whether you use it in practice or in a game. Baseball bats should be properly maintained to get as much longevity out of it as possible. As players can attest, the player and the bat form an undeniable bond so maintaining and caring for a bat is crucial. As such, there are simple and easy ways to take care of your bat to get the longest life for your bat.

General Care Tips for your baseball bat

Store your baseball bats. A good baseball bag can’t be understated here as it will help protect your bat from contact during transportation.  Outside of the transportation protection, a good bag can also protect your bat from the elements. Rain, sand, and salty air are just a few common elements that can wear down a bat so a good bag will go a long way in preservation.

Hit only baseballs with it. When we were younger, it was common to hit rocks and debris with our bats. We paid no mind to the scratches and dents it made. No matter what it is, a bat is designed to hit baseballs and nothing else. Hitting practice balls are fine too.

Don’t store your bat in extreme heat or cold. Regardless of bat composition, all bats are sensitive to temperatures. The extreme temperatures will add stress to the bat or loosen up the composition making the bat not as effective or stable.

Rotate your bat frequently. Whether you’re doing batting drills or in game-time situation, rotate your bat to evenly distribute the contact points on the barrel. When you use one side too often, the barrel can become worn down.

Don’t pound or slam your bat. Some days we just don’t have it at the plate. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you and slam the bat down. This will inevitably add extra stress to all parts of the bat, making it less effective and possible causing permanent damage to the bat.

Outside of the care tips mentioned above, there are also a number of bat maintenance items like bat wraps and tape, that when properly applied, can make a big impact on your game and keep your bat alive for much longer.
