You might have seen more than a few players using what appear to be very old gloves, which may have led you to wonder: How long do baseball gloves last? It’s an important question, particularly if you’re thinking about dropping some serious coin on a new baseball glove. You want to have some assurance that you’re getting your money’s worth, that the glove will perform for many years. The truth is a glove can last for that long, but it depends on three main factors:
Glove Quality Impacts Longevity
We’ve all heard the phrase “you get what you pay for” and this couldn’t be more true than with baseball gloves. Gloves made from full-grain, premium steerhide, or kipskin leathers are going to cost more at checkout, but that’s because they’re superior in quality, performance, and longevity. With good care (more on that in the next section), you can expect to get 2-4 years out of these types of gloves, and possibly more. However, if you decide on a lesser material, you may end up having to replace or your glove after one season or perhaps even mid-season.
How Much/Often Is It Being Used:
It’s difficult to pin down how long a baseball glove will last without knowing how much it’s being used. If you’re playing with it one season (5-6 months) a year, we’re confident a premium leather glove will last 2-4 years. On the other hand, if you’re participating in travel ball and playing games every weekend in the spring, summer, and fall, plus using the same glove during practice/workouts, that’s significantly more wear and tear. As a result, your glove may not last as long.
Quality Of Care Increases Lifespan
You can buy a glove made from the finest leather but make no mistake: treating it poorly will shorten its lifespan. That means not leaving the glove outside or in direct sunlight for long periods of time. We also suggest inspecting the glove after each game, looking for scuffs or dirt marks. If you find them, remove them with light soap and a damp cloth. You also should also regularly treat your glove with oil or conditioner. Remember, leather is animal skin that will dry and crack over time if it’s not properly treated. Doing this once a month should suffice unless you’re consistently playing in an extremely hot or dry area. In that case, consider treating your glove once a week. See our Baseball Glove Care Guide for additional information on how to make your glove last longer.
Signs You Need A New Baseball Glove
Even if you take care of your glove perfectly, at some point, it will need to be replaced. This can be difficult for some players who have grown attached to their glove, but don’t let sentimentality be the reason you start committing errors in the field. Indeed, a worn-out glove can negatively affect performance. Here’s what to watch out for:
1. Tears In The Leather: If your glove is torn anywhere, it’s time to shop for a new one. Even a small tear will only get worse with time and eventually compromise your ability to absorb hard-hit line drives.
2. Feels Excessively Heavy: Most of that excess weight comes from playing in the rain or the glove continually absorbing sweat from your hand. A heavy glove will slow you down – don’t put up with it.
3. Worn-Out Padding: If the ball starts to hurt your hand more, there’s a good chance the protective padding is wearing out. If you continue to play with it, your hand is at risk for bruising, or possibly worse.
4. Leather Is Cracking: This is not as bad as a tear, but it’s still a serious sign that your glove is nearing the end of its life, and again, will only get worse with time/use.
5. You’re Committing More Errors: If you’re repeatedly missing balls you should be coming up with or you normally come up with, a new glove may be in order.
How long baseball gloves last really depends on you. Did you purchase a glove with high-quality leather? Were you careful about the mileage you put on it? Did you take good care of it? If you answered yes to all these questions, your glove will live a long, happy life! Of course, all baseball gloves eventually wear out, and when that time comes, make sure to get your new one right here at BaseballSavings!
